The Chinese Medicine team, consisting of UTAR Department of Chinese Medicine, GHHS Chinese Medical Centre, and Malaysian Chinese Medical Society of Epidemic Control and Prevention (CMEC), provided Chinese Medicine consultation services and standard care for COVID-19 patients at the PKRC (Pusat Kuarantin & Rawatan COVID-19 Berisiko Rendah) located at Unicorn Hotel along the KL-Seremban Highway.

This is the first time that the Chinese Medicine team came together as a collaborative effort to assist COVID-19 patients at the Unicorn Hotel PKRC.  This PKRC is operated by the Kajang Plaza Medical Centre (KPMC). The Centre provides patients with two health check-ups a day, and medical personnel are stationed at the Centre 24 hours a day to care for the patients.

The Chinese Medicine team collectively adopted CMEC's “Chinese Medicine Practice Guidelines for COVID-19 in Malaysia" to provide Chinese Medicine consultation services to COVID-19 patients with a method based on syndrome differentiation.

The team members involved in the Chinese Medicine consultations were UTAR Department of Chinese Medicine Head-cum-CMEC President Assoc Prof Dr Te Kian Keong, Practitioner Connie Shu Siew Ing and Practitioner Goh Suh Kae who are also UTAR alumni, Practitioner Kung Wan Jing, Practitioner Choo Zi Xian and Practitioner Kung Shun Ren.

“CMEC has cooperated with multiple parties to fight the pandemic for more than a year. The Society provided online consultation services to more than 5,000 people, of which nearly 4,000 were people with close contacts to COVID-19 patients, COVID-19 patients or discharged patients. These previous experiences have laid the foundation for Chinese Medicine to join in the fight against the pandemic, and also brought the various parties together for collaborative effort,” said Dr Te. He added that the Chinese Medicine consultation services have been well-received and appreciated by the patients.

This collaboration is one of the pioneering efforts between Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine in the fight against the COVID-19 virus outside China. This is also the first PKRC in Malaysia to provide close monitoring and treatment in Western Medicine while offering Chinese Medicine consultation services for symptoms relief. The Chinese Medicine consultation is a voluntary option for the COVID-19 patients at the PKRC Centre. They can choose to opt for the Chinese Medicine services depending on their health conditions.
