Impact of AI on biomedical research and education

The Centre for Research on Communicable Diseases (CRCD) in collaboration with the Centre for Biomedical and Nutrition Research (CBNR) organised a webinar titled Artificial Intelligence in Biomedical Research and Education on 27 July 2022 via Zoom. It attracted a total of 150 participants.

The objective of the webinar was to provide participants with a better understanding of artificial intelligence and its usage in various aspects of life including healthcare and education.

Speaking at the webinar was Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Sciences (PIEAS) Prof Dr Asifullah Khan who presented on Deep Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Its Applications in Medical Image Analysis. In his session, he spoke about Machine Learning, DNN and CNN, Deep Convolutional Neural Networks, Channel Boosted CNN, and Deep CNN for medical image analysis.

Prof Dr Asifullah said, “Artificial Intelligence is a programme that can sense, reason, act and adapt, while machine learning is algorithms whose performance improve as they are exposed to more data over time. Deep learning, on the other hand, is a subset of machine learning in which multilayered neural networks learn from vast amounts of data.”

MyEdu AI Robotics Research Centre Dr Jeffrey Tan Too Chuan presented in the following session. In his presentation titled The Advancement of AI Robotics in Medicine and Healthcare: Are We Ready?, he spoke about AI robotics education for everyone, AI robotics application in medicine and healthcare, and AI robotics education for medicine and healthcare students.

As Dr Jeffrey Tan explained about AI in healthcare, he said, “AI is used in medical imaging to screen cancers, diagnose infection of kidney and liver, detect brain tumour, dental imaging analysis and many more.” Dr Tan also spoke about natural language processing, surgical robots, AI for rehabilitation, healthcare system innovations and other related topics.
