Faculty of Accountancy and
Management (FAM) Department of Economics academic Dr Ooi Tze Wei and his
team successfully secured a grant worth RM78,000 under the Fundamental
Research Grant Scheme (FRGS) 2022 for their research titled Understanding
the Underlying Mechanism of False Financial Claims among Malaysian
Undergraduate Students and its Behavioural Mitigation. The grant was awarded
by the Ministry of Education (MOE) for the duration of two years.
The research was led by Dr Ooi.
The co-researchers were Assoc Prof Dr Tan Chee Seng, Dr Sia Bee Chuan and
Yap Wai Onn from UTAR, and Suzanna binti Awang Bono from Universiti Sains
Malaysia (USM).
Sharing the aim of the research,
Dr Ooi said, “The present study will compare how individuals cheat for more
money through financial reporting when they are faced with different
difficulties of a working task, and investigate if their honesty can be
invoked.” He hopes that, at the end of the research, he and his team can
identify a positive behavioural mechanism that can motivate individuals to
submit true financial claims.
Dr Ooi added, “I was happy when I
received the positive news about the grant approval for my research. Now, I
am looking forward and ready for the challenges ahead - fulfilling the
output of the project e.g. Publication and Human Capital and many more.”
He also offered advice to
students, “Do not be afraid of failures but be afraid of not trying. Success
is what happens when you survive all your disappointments. Be creative in
doing research and do not give up! Research is deemed highly significant,
especially when you can prove or debunk the validity of the theories with a
good experimental design.”
