The Department of Economics under
the Faculty of Accountancy and Management, collaborated with the Belt and
Road Strategic Research Centre (BRSRC) and the Global Economics Society to
organise a webinar titled Breakthrough Thinking, Embrace Change on 15 August
2022 via Zoom.
Invited to be the speaker was
Dato’ Joseph Lim Heng Ee. Dato’ Joseph Lim is the industry advisor for UTAR
FAM Bachelor of Economics (Honours) Global Economics programme. He is also
the founder and managing director of Global Green Synergy Sdn Bhd, the
president of Malaysia Macau Chamber of Commerce (MMCC) and the vice
president of Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC). The webinar was
moderated by Acting Head of Department of Economics Tiong Kui Ming.
The webinar covered a variety of
topics, including the green inflation, the black swan scenario, the eight
challenges for Malaysia’s economy and people, the ways to overcome
challenges during difficult times and many more.
Dato’ Joseph Lim began the webinar
by advising participants that no matter what challenges they face, they must
learn to “think outside the box”. “We need to explore ideas that are
creative and unusual and that are not limited or controlled by rules or
tradition,” he said.
He then added, “Black swan events
cannot be predicted in advance. They can cause catastrophic damage to an
economy by negatively impacting markets and investments, but even the use of
robust modelling cannot prevent a black swan event.”
Speaking of the economic
challenges faced by the Malaysians, Dato’ Joseph Lim stated, “There are
eight economic challenges that Malaysians face, namely rising living costs
(inflation), decreased consumer purchasing power, increased business
operating costs, market shortages, economic downturn, increased debts,
personal safety crisis, and internet fraud crisis.” “While we cannot change
the world or the obstacles we face, we can choose how to change ourselves
and our mindset in order to overcome the challenges,” he added.
He concluded the webinar by
sharing some strategies to overcome obstacles. “We need to stay cool and
calm while facing challenges; be creative in dealing with challenges. We
must also constantly strive for self-improvement, resolve problems and start
over if necessary. Also, always do proper financial planning and cash flow
management. Be patient when a crisis occurs.”
“No matter what happens, you must
remain calm and pay attention to your psychological feelings. Always conduct
personal self-examination for both your mind and body; you can see the
truth. Also, learn to live in the present moment,” he emphasised.
The webinar saw an active
interaction between the speaker and the participants. It ended with an
extensive yet insightful Q&A session.
