UTAR celebrates its scholarship recipients

The UTAR Top Achiever Scholarship Ceremony was held on 15 and 17 August 2022 at the Multipurpose Hall of Sungai Long Campus and Heritage Hall of Kampar Campus respectively. The ceremony aimed to showcase the students who have received the UTAR scholarship. The recipients were comprised of students from the June 2022 intake; who are currently enrolled in the Foundation and Bachelor programmes. The ceremony saw a total of 377 students receiving the scholarships.

Gracing the ceremony at Sungai Long Campus were UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Division of Programme Promotion (DPP) Director Lee Choy Fong and UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Dean Assoc Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She.

The ceremony at Sungai Long Campus kicked off with lively performances from the UTAR Chinese Orchestra Club and UTAR Music Club. It was followed by a speech from Prof Ewe, who said, “As a university by the people, for the people, UTAR makes every effort to give back to society, such as providing scholarships and loans to students in need since its inception. In the ensuing years, UTAR will continue to provide financial assistance to students who are in need, allowing them to pursue their higher education studies at the university and obtain a valuable degree for a better future.”

Following the speech, the names of the recipients were put on display along with some short videos from some students, extending their gratitude. There were also speeches from two of the scholarship recipients, namely Foundation in Science student Ho See Wai and Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) student Chen Yee Fei.

Ho expressed his appreciation to UTAR, saying, “I stand here representing all the scholarship recipients to thank UTAR for providing the scholarship to us upon our admission to the university. We are grateful and touched to have UTAR’s support in our pursuit of higher education. It gives us a good feeling to know that UTAR is always there to support their students in their education.”

In his speech, Chen shared, “As a filmmaker and scholar, returning to UTAR to continue my academic journey has been pivotal. The UTAR Talent Scholarship will be an immense help to reduce my financial burden as a full-time student. This means I can fully focus on my studies and commit to enjoying the university experience. I would like to thank the UTAR President and Vice President for giving me the wonderful opportunity with this scholarship.”

Meanwhile, present for the ceremony at Kampar Campus were Prof Ewe, Prof Choong, Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) Kampar Director Ts Tan Lee Siew, Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT) Deputy Dean for Academic Development and Undergraduate Programmes Assoc Prof Ir Ts Dr Leong Kah Hon and Division of Programme Promotion Deputy Director Tan Choon Wah. 

The ceremony at Kampar Campus saw a beautiful performance by the UTAR Chinese Orchestra Club and a speech by Prof Ewe. It was followed by another two speeches from the scholarship recipients. First to deliver her speech was UTAR Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) student, Amanda Lee Xin Yee, who expressed her gratitude to UTAR. “Thank you to UTAR for giving me the opportunity to continue my tertiary education without having to worry about any financial problems and move towards fulfilling my dream. As the eldest in the family, I would always try to ease my parents’ burden by consistently obtaining good grades so that I could receive a full scholarship when I continue my tertiary education. UTAR ultimately became my primary choice because the University offered a 100% scholarship under the Top Achiever Scholarship Award. With this scholarship, I can enjoy affordable quality education,” said Amanda Lee.

Foundation student Lai Yong Xin was next to deliver her speech. She said, “As I come from a middle-class family, the scholarship helps my parents with their financial obligations and reduces the burden on my family. Thanks to UTAR Top Achiever Scholarship, I could further my educational dream in a university with good resources and facilities. The scholarship will always be one of my motivators to work hard.”
