Musically talented UTAR students
Seven musically talented students from UTAR Music Club, namely How Jia Le from the Early Childhood Education programme, Tong Kah Pau from the Software Engineering programme, Liang Shuat Teng from the Broadcasting programme, Tam Ka Wing from Foundation in Science programme, Brian Chua Qi Zhi from Foundation in Arts programme, Nguyen Cong Quoc Huy from Mechanical Engineering programme and Ting Li Han from International Business programme have actively performed in various engaging events such as Band-Age Music Concert, UTAR Colour Run, UTAR 20th Anniversary, Go As ONE Carnival, Aniu 阿牛concert and many more.
They shared, “Music can change the world because it can change people. It will not only change our mood, but also change the way we think and our character.” The students shared that they were initially introverted people with shy personalities but music changed them to be bold and confident. They explained that they use music to express their feelings as music helps them gain confidence while being on stage; totally changing who they are.
Ting and Quoc Huy were the vocalists for the UTAR 20th Anniversary Song - 20 Strong. “We feel blessed to be a part of the production and perform this beautiful song composed by Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) lecturer Dr Nadya Supian. We love the lyrics; it describes how UTAR grew. It is very touching.”
According to the students, they would usually take turns to perform at events based on their schedule availability and class arrangement. “No one can whistle the symphony, it takes a whole orchestra to play,” the students enthused while explaining that each of them plays a different role in their band. How, Nguyen Cong and Ting are the vocalists while Tong plays both the vocalist and the guitarist roles. Tam is a guitarist who is able to play both the electric and bass guitars while Brian is the drummer in the band. Last but not least, Liang is responsible to provide technical support for the team.
In addition, the students also said by joining the Music Club, they were able to meet new people and expand their circle of friends who share the same interest. “Meeting someone with same music taste is seriously the best thing ever!” they enthused. According to the students, most of them were self-learners as they do not have a music background. They learnt to play the instrument by watching video demonstrations on YouTube.
