UTAR scholarships pave way for university education

UTAR scholarship award presentation was held on 14 November 2022 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus to commemorate and celebrate the scholarship holders of the October 2022 intake, who are currently enrolled in Foundation and Bachelor programmes. The scholarship award presentation was also held at Kampar Campus on 16 November 2022. Both campuses saw a total of 1,066 students receiving the scholarship awards.

Prof Dato’ Ewe hoping students can stay focused on getting good grades and do their best in their tertiary studies

UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat congratulated all the UTAR scholarship recipients and said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” Having an education under your belt will open your door to more opportunities. Therefore, I hope that by receiving this UTAR scholarship, you can stay focused on getting good grades and doing your best in your tertiary studies.”

He added, “As a University by the people and for the people, UTAR has been receiving support and contributions from the community. As part of the effort to give back to society, the University has been providing scholarships and loans to students in need.  As of 2022, over RM170million internal scholarships and over RM12million internal loans have been awarded to students.”

Prof Dato’ Ewe also thanked all donors, the community and the people for the trust and support given towards the University. He said in the ensuing years, UTAR will continue to provide financial assistance to students who are in need, ensuring deserving students receive quality education and lifelong learning opportunities at the University and obtain a valuable degree for a better future.

Victor Chen is happy to share his talent in filmmaking with UTAR

During the ceremony, UTAR Talent Scholarship recipient Victor Chen Yee Fei, who is also the director of “One Step Closer to Our Dreams”— an inspirational promotional video for UTAR Department of Scholarship and Financial Aids (DSFA), enthused, “I am extremely grateful to be able to pursue my passion of making films while pursuing my studies. I truly enjoyed shooting this video with Prof Dato’ Ewe and our fellow scholarship holders.”

He added, “One Step Closer to Our Dreams is made by the UTAR Film Club in collaboration with DSFA, and with the support of many other departments. The process of making this video has been an exciting journey. I am glad that I am able to share my talent in filmmaking with UTAR, where the Talent scholarship served its purpose. Let’s keep excelling in our studies while contributing to the university with our talents.”

Wong said the scholarship can ease his parents’ financial burden

Foundation in Arts student Wong Guan Ming She, who is a recipient of the UTAR Top Achiever Scholarship, expressed his gratitude to his secondary school SMK Perimbun for providing him with a fruitful and positive learning experience. He then said, “I am glad I chose UTAR to further my education. I chose UTAR because of its affordable tuition fees that can ease my parents’ financial burden. On top of that, UTAR also recognises my academic performance through this 100% scholarship. Let’s study hard and make our dreams come true.”

Hillary Gan said that she will give back to the community and help others in the same way as UTAR helped her

Foundation in Science student Hillary Gan Zhu Ci expressed that she is glad to be chosen as one of the recipients of UTAR CARE Scholarships. She said, “Thank you UTAR for your generosity in awarding me the scholarship. I am so happy to know that I am among the first batch of recipients of this scholarship. I will give back to the community and help others in the same way as UTAR has helped me. I promise I will work hard to maintain this scholarship.”

Sam is grateful to receive this scholarship in support of his foundation study as well as his degree

M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS) student Sam Yuk Siong, the recipient of the UTAR Sports Scholarship, enthused, “I am a national table tennis player and I am happy to be selected as one of the recipients for the UTAR Sports Scholarship. I feel very privileged and touched to receive this scholarship. It is amazing to know that UTAR always assists students in their educational pursuits. I received a 100% sports scholarship and I will maintain my athlete momentum by participating in many competitions.”

Na advised all the recipients to maintain a grateful heart

JinBodhi Bursary recipient from the Faculty of Accountancy and Management, Na Wan Ping thanked UTAR and other generous sponsors from various organisations, foundations, banks, and individuals who contributed to the success of her educational journey. She said, “No matter who we are, where we are from, we must never forget why and where we started, and how our dreams can be accomplished. 不忘初心,继续前进, Keep fighting to achieve our dreams. All of us must work hard to maintain the scholarship we are holding and never forget the importance of having a grateful heart. Remember to take advantage of any chance to “give back” to your parents, school or UTAR with your time, effort, or expertise. Let us be grateful to the people who make us happy; they are the charming gardeners who make our souls blossom.”

Also present at the ceremony were UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) Dean Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei, Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science Dean Assoc Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She, Faculty of Accountancy and Management Dean Dr Sia Bee Chuan, secondary school principals and counsellors from SMJK Yu Hua, SMJK Confucian, SMK Perimbun and Hibiscus International School, UTAR staff and students.

SMK Perimbun Counsellor Cikgu Roslina said that she felt proud to see the former students of SMK Perimbun on stage, receiving the scholarship. She expressed her hope to see the students unleash their potential, excel and do well in their studies at UTAR. SMK Perimbun Counsellor Cikgu Siti Rohaya wished all the students, especially former students of SMK Perimbun, who received the scholarships will be able to do well in their studies and succeed in life.

On the other hand, SMJK Confucian Counsellor Madam Tew Sok Hong expressed, “I am very happy to see the achievements of the students and I am grateful that this scholarship can help to reduce the burden of their families. I am amazed to see UTAR’s generosity in helping the students. I hope students, especially the students from SMJK Confucian, can cherish this scholarship and do their best. And I hope they can give back to society in the future.”
