UTAR commemorates its 20th Anniversary with the launching of logo and website

To commemorate UTAR’s milestone anniversary, the launching ceremony of the 20th Anniversary logo and website was held at UTAR Multipurpose Hall of Sungai Long Campus on 24 January 2022. Present at were UTAR Chancellor Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, UTAR Council Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting Chew Peh, Council Members Datuk Lee Leck Cheng, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Dr Fong Chan Onn, Datuk Lim Si Cheng, Hew Fen Yee, UTAR President Ir Prof Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Vice President for R&D and Commercialisation Prof Ts Dr Faidz bin Abd Rahman, Vice President for Internationalisation and Academic Development Ir Prof Dr Goi Bok Min,  Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Registrar Yim Lin Heng and staff.

Tan Sri Ting enthused, “I am proud to salute the university leadership, faculty and staff on this occasion. It is your diligence, teamwork and commitment that have brought UTAR this far. You have stayed focused and united to fulfil a dream and a vision that has led to the success and growth of the university. Congratulations to all of you. Over the years, UTAR has achieved astonishing growth. Every year, some 5,000 students graduate from UTAR and venture into every kind of industry as they fulfil their dreams for a better life and contribute to society. You must all be proud to be able to educate your students and train them to lead and make a positive difference in society. Moving forward, we need to continue to work together to lift UTAR to even greater heights. I would like to express my sincere thanks once again to everyone for your support and contribution to the university.”

Prof Ewe in his speech expressed his appreciation to the community, industry, partners, donors, students, parents, alumni, the government and UTAR staff. He said, “To those of you who worked for UTAR as long as this university, thank you for your loyalty and contribution to the university. To all of you who are now in UTAR, thank you as well for believing in UTAR and for helping the university to progress to where we are today. UTAR can only succeed if we all work together as a team and we all move in the same direction under one vision and achieve the same goals for the university. We should continue to support community services.”

Prof Ewe added, “The past two years have been challenging as we ride through the waves of the pandemic, switch to online teaching and learning, provide support and online learning resources for our students, work from home, set up UTAR Hospital, and manage health and safety protocols for everyone on campus. Going through all these, I feel, it has made us stronger, more united and ever ready to take on new challenges. After all, we are an educational institution and our main objective remains to provide affordable quality education and to train our youths to be leaders of tomorrow. Over the last two decades, we were on the right trajectory with increasing enrolments year after year, and we have already trained 72,000 graduates for the nation. Let us all continue with this momentum and work together for even greater successes in the next 20 years and more.”

In November 2021, a competition was held to create a meaningful and creative logo to best define the 20th Anniversary of UTAR. The competition received 61 entries from UTAR students, staff and alumni. Staff Loke Mun Sin won first place, with a cash prize of RM500, Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Civil Engineering student Wong Yen Pheng won second place with a cash prize of RM300 and Faculty of Accountancy and Management Bachelor of Accounting student Bek Hung Yi came in third with a cash prize of RM200. All winners received certificates.

The colours used in the logo are derived from the UTAR logo colours of blue, red and yellow which indicate the Malaysian identity of the university. Blue symbolises commitment and the future. Yellow symbolises intellect and quality. Red symbolises strength and passion. The blue illustration of the logo replicates the Chinese characters "二十" (Twenty), with one of the strokes depicting the rising wings of the Phoenix. The UTAR logo at the base symbolises the foundation of strength and resilience while the rising wings of the Phoenix symbolise the dissemination of knowledge and the advancing growth of the university. The logo embodies UTAR’s 20 years of inspiring educational excellence while forging ahead with continuous commitment to quality education, research and innovation, contribution to the community and sustainable growth.
