Chinese New Year greetings from the organising committee
To celebrate the Chinese New Year, UTAR held the “International
Celebration of Virtual Chinese New Year Carnival 2022” on 21 January 2022.
It featured a wave of exciting activities and performances to enliven the
special occasion among UTAR students and the community.

In his opening remarks at the virtual carnival, UTAR President Ir Prof Dr
Ewe Hong Tat said, “The Chinese New Year celebration is an auspicious day,
celebrated with family, friends and the community. It is a time for
reunions, renewal of ties and sharing of joy and happiness. It brings people
together to enjoy the celebrative mood of the New Year. Therefore, I am glad
that our Department of Student Affairs and our student clubs and societies
have come together to organise this celebration and share it with the
international community. I hope you will all enjoy this carnival and
celebrate the vibrancy of this occasion that brings everyone together.”
He continued, “2022 is the year of the Chinese zodiac animal Tiger- which
symbolises vigour, bravery, ambition, generosity, confidence and stability.
I hope the year of the Tiger will bring new hopes and new beginnings for
greater happiness and prosperity for you and your family. May each and every
day of the year ahead be filled with new hopes, good health and new
opportunities for a brighter and successful future.”
A line-up of performances was presented to delighted attendees, ranging from
a quintessential lion dance to a captivating orchestra performance, stunning
dance, singing and diabolo performances, arts and crafts workshop, as well
as quiz about Chinese New Year.

Prior to the event, a series of competitions were organised to promote the Chinese tradition, which included Photography Lucky Draw, Funao Greeting Card Design Competition, Red Envelope Design Competition, Calligraphy Competition and Photography Contest. The International Celebration of Virtual Chinese New Year Carnival 2022 was a concerted effort of UTAR Department of Student Affairs of Sungai Long Campus and students’ clubs and societies including Wushu Club, Chinese Orchestra Unit, Diabolo Unit, Chinese Language Society, Dance Club, Choir Club and Sustainable Development Club.
