Educational trip to Bamboo Playhouse and Tadom Hill Resorts

Architecture students from Design Studio II visited the Bamboo Playhouse in Kuala Lumpur and Tadom Hill Resorts in Selangor on 28 and 29 June 2022. The trip was led by four lecturers, namely Fernando Paulo Da Costa Andrade, Rahmawaty, Yong Song Zhe and Tew Bun Teck from the Department of Architecture and Sustainable Design.

The objective of the trip was to provide the students with an opportunity to explore and understand bamboo design and construction. It also aimed to prepare the students for the upcoming international bamboo design competition in China.

On the first day at Tadom Hill Resort, students and lecturers heartily engaged in recreational activities, rafting and rowing on the artificial lake, riding ATVs and enjoying BBQ until late hour. The second day, however, was essentially dedicated to hours of sketching. Students divided themselves into four groups and carried out their sketching at four different locations around the resort premise.

While selecting their preferred point of view, the students were able to transform their vantage views onto their respective sketching pads. They were also able to pick up the sensory perception of the Tadom building’s elements and details, structure and form, landscape and spatial qualities during the sketching activity.

The premise owner of the Tadom Hill Resort, Datuk Lai Yeng Fock, was very hospitable to the students. He took the time to show the students around and explain the characteristics of bamboo. Furthermore, he showed how bamboo charcoal was made and brought the students to visit a new bamboo structure which was still under construction. The students also had the opportunity to see Datuk Lai’s staff (Orang Asli) demonstrate bamboo-cutting techniques.
