UTAR held a
science camp for the aboriginal community in Selangor on 26 March 2022 and
21 May 2022. The aim of the science camp was to promote learning in science
among primary and secondary school students living in Kampung Orang Asli
in Selangor—Kolam Air Bangkong, Bukit Tampoi and Kelinsing. It also gave
UTAR students an opportunity to give back to the community by volunteering
their time and skills in providing community service.
The students
participating in the science camp included four voluntary students from UTAR
and 43 primary and secondary school students from Kampung Orang Asli
in Selangor. The four UTAR students who were responsible for planning and
implementing the event were Er Ji Siang, Lua Ze How, Tan Xing Yun and Ang
Lin. They were assisted by the Department of Orang Asli Development—Jabatan
Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA).
The science
camp activity started with an ice-breaking game to promote interaction
between students and make the atmosphere lively. Due to the COVID-19
pandemic, the activities prepared for the science camp were simple and they
involved less physical contact. The activities included invisible ink,
magical balloons and flying saucer games. After the long period of online
learning mode, the primary and secondary school students who attended the
camp were eager to take part in the activities and they responded
enthusiastically.
