Advocating mental health and self-care awareness

The online talk poster

The Counselling and Guidance Unit of Kampar Campus organised a Mental Health Awareness Talk in conjunction with the Counselling and Wellness Week 2022 on 1 June 2022 via Microsoft Teams. Present to deliver the talk were Faculty of Creative Industries (FCI) Department of Media academic Zachary Roland A.F. Anthony.

The online talk aimed to discuss participants’ challenges in life and help them build a positive mindset. It also aimed to upscale the passion, perseverance and life performance of the participants.

Zachary explaining the main objective of the webinar

Zachary started his webinar by explaining mindset and resilient thinking. He said, “The mindset overlook is how you view yourself and the world around you. Resilience is the ability to bounce back from the stresses of life; it is not about avoiding the stress, but learning to thrive within the stress.” Besides, he also advised the participants to have a positive mindset and thinking. 'Today, no one can bring me down.’ You have to say this with courage and strength. You and I need to move forward despite the mental and physical challenges we face in life. The new normal we are living in requires a new mindset.”

Zachary emphasising the concept of 3As

He then moved on to explain the 3As concept, namely Accept, Analyse and Activate. He said, “We owe nothing to anyone. We live for ourselves. Learn to accept that there will be difficult phases in your life and then learn to analyse the difficulty of the situation; this is where you understand how big or small the obstacles are. When a problem arises, you will be bound to feel burdened by it. Keep in mind that the issues you face are not permanent. It is just a phase for you to experience. You need to activate the positivity in your mind to overcome these hindrances.”

The speaker also advised, “My key message is— help the mind to handle the current and future demands; keep improving the way you think, feel and act. You have to be able to think right, feel right, and act right. The attitude determines your mindset, the behaviour determines your actions and the character determines your impression of others. Use your minds to look at things and perspectives that give you hope; take on everything that is thrown to you, accept it, and believe you can do it.”
The insightful talk continued with simple exercises and a lucky draw contest. It ended with a Q&A session.
