A book launch event was held in a hybrid mode by UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) on 16 June 2022 at Sungai Long Campus for FMHS Head of Department of Surgery Clinical Assoc Prof Dr Yan Naing Soe and his team.

The book, titled Surgical Short-Case Made Easy: A Handbook, consisted of nine modules in which common surgical short cases were illustrated with tables, diagrams and photographs. Each module exhibits an initial explanation of applied basic science knowledge followed by the approach to a patient with professionalism.

Invited to give a speech at the ceremony was FMHS Dean Emeritus Prof Dr Cheong Soon Keng. In his remarks, Prof Cheong said that UTAR encourages its staff not only to publish papers in general, but also in terms of books to share their research work or personal experiences. “I know there are many of these kinds of books around the world, but we always have unique ones in our own institution. A lot of people thought books must be highly specialised, but there is always in demand all these short introductory books, especially for beginners, so that they can have an easier grasp of the whole subject,” said Prof Cheong. He congratulated Dr Yan and his team for producing the book successfully this year; the year UTAR celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Dr Yan, at his book launch, expressed his gratitude to his team and everyone who gave support for the production of the book. “This kind of book publication would not be a one-stop. We are going to produce another book probably in one or two years,” he said, adding that there will be a clinical anatomy workshop series, and a relevant syllabus or book would be produced with that opportunity.
