UTAR visited
the National Sports Council of Malaysia (Majlis
Sukan Negara Malaysia) on 13 June 2022 to
discuss and strengthen the strategic cooperation relating to learning and
training opportunities for Malaysian national athletes.
The visit took place at
Pejabat Pensuruhjaya Sukan in Bukit Jalil.
The delegates representing UTAR
were Division of Programme
Promotion (DPP) Director Lee Choy Fong, Department of Scholarships and
Financial Aid Head Tan Wear Sim and DPP Assistant Manager Norlaila binti
Ismail. They were cordially received by Head of
Career and Athletes Education
Secretariat
Joherman bin Amir, Head of
Education Department Mohd Safwan bin Mohd Radzi and Malaysian Athlete Career
and Education Secretariat (MACE) Youth and Sports Officer Shakira binti
Yahaya.
During the meeting, Laila informed
the members about the development of UTAR including its hospital in Kampar,
the programmes it offers as well as its progression routes. Tan, on the
other hand, explained the Top Achiever Scholarship Awards and UTAR Sports
and Talent Scholarships offered in UTAR. She also mentioned that UTAR
provides tuition fees waiver to 10 athletes who achieve excellent
performance in sports every year.
Both parties then continued their
discussion on how they can work together to arrange more educational-related
activities for their athletes in the coming months, especially in the
training of soft skills and life skills such as digital literacy and various
memory techniques and skills.
Lee also suggested that MSN could
team up with UTAR to pique the interest of young athletes who are still in
school to consider Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
programmes as possible career paths. He informed that UTAR, in collaboration
with KLESF, organises various talks and STEM hands-on experiments for
primary and secondary school students, which can be extended to the MSN
community.
The meeting ended with a tour to
the gymnasium and other sports facilities.
