The Faculty of Business Administration of Soka University hosted the “Summer
Global Programme” virtually from 8 August 2022 to 12 August 2022. The focus
of the programme was “Creative industry and humanistic leadership in
post-pandemic Japan” and it included a total of five UTAR participants.
It also saw participation from other universities which included Methodist
College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL), Ateneo de Naga University (ADNU), The Chinese
University of Hong Kong (CUHK), National Economics University (NEU),
National University of Singapore (NUS), Soka University (SU), Universiti
Malaya, University of Macau (UMAC), and The University of Manchester.

On the
first day of the programme, Soka University academic Prof Dr Kazuma Hatano
from the Faculty of Business Administration, introduced and provided
information about the subjects and grading criteria of the group
presentation to the participants. Dr Michiko Izumitani, an associate
professor at Soka University College of Business Administration, explained
how to establish a team canvas using the Miro website and later proceeded
with some team-building exercises.
The topic
of focus on the second day was “Humanistic leadership post-COVID-19, under
VUCA: Buddhist viewpoints”. Dr Hirohisa Shimura from Soka University said,
“Today’s quickly-expanding enterprises exist in a volatile, unpredictable,
complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world, and the COVID-19 pandemic has
undoubtedly made the problem worse. Even in times of crisis, like the
COVID-19 outbreak, a company’s organisational framework must undergo
modifications in the VUCA era.” According to him, VUCA 2.0 is comprised of
four components, namely vision, understanding, bravery, and adaptability.

Other
presentations included “What can you learn from Japanese working ethics?” by

of Economics Assoc Prof Dr David Marutschke, and “SDG innovation: Japan’s
KBEs (knowledge-based enterprise) and creative industries in global
business” by Faculty of Business Administration of Soka University Dr Tai
Wei Lim.
A total of
three sessions were held on the third day. Each session featured different
talks. The talks included “The case study of ACG (Anime, Comic and Games)
industries” by Dr Tai; “The future of Japanese soft power leadership,
integration of leadership and management” and “Re-thinking about Japanese
popular culture: Focusing on Johnny’s idols” by Student Performance
Acceleration Center of Soka University Hiromitsu Fuku.
The participants spent the fourth day working on their
group presentations in separate discussion rooms with their group members.
The last day of the programme saw participants presenting their topic of
discussion in groups. In general, the ideas and lectures delivered by the
speakers were interesting and interactive.
