The Department of Mass Communication under the Faculty of Creative
Industries (FCI) organised a documentary screening session and a sharing
session on 14 November 2022 at Sungai Long Campus to create awareness of
environmental protection among university students and a sense of urgency
about waste issues in Malaysia.

The screening, which was conducted via hybrid mode, featured Prevail
Productions Sdn Bhd Founder and Producer, and Sunway University lecturer
Umashankari Yomarakuro who directed the film, ‘Can’t Run, Can’t Hide’. The
film secured the Freedom Film Festival (FFN) Grant 2021.
Another highlight of the session was a presentation by Pua Lay Peng, who is
a chemical engineer, environmental activist and frontline defender against
plastic pollution in Malaysia.
The documentary focused on the heavy industrialisation
around the Kuala Langat area which led to illegal activities by factories.
Several types of pollution caused by the factories have seriously affected
the residents of Kuala Langat. Umashankari shared her experience and the
purpose of producing the documentary while Pua explained the statistics and
news about the E-waste and plastic waste imported by Malaysia.

Present at the screening event were Environmental Researcher at

Representative Albert Bansa, FCI lecturers Dr Swagata Sinha
Roy, Chew Wee Lee, Tan Yang Sheng and students.
The session ended with a
Q&A session and a photography session.
