Students display creativity in products development and marketing competition
With the aim to develop new food products with enhanced shelf-life using purple sweet potatoes as well as to promote local agricultural products, a competition titled “Integrating Academics and Industry: Kampar Purple Sweet Potato Products Development and Marketing Competition” was organised on 27 June 2022 for UTAR students.
The competition was jointly organised by UTAR Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) of Kampar Campus, Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS), Faculty of Science (FSc), Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF), and I Culture Bhd. It consisted of three tracks, namely marketing track, multimedia track and food product development track.
To celebrate the efforts of the students, a prize-giving ceremony for the competition was held on 9 September 2022 at the Heritage Hall of Kampar Campus.
The participants who won first place were granted RM800 while first runner-up, second runner-up and consolation prize winners were eligible to win RM500, RM200 and gifts respectively.
The winners mainly consisted of FBF students from the marketing track; FAS students from the multimedia track; and FSc students from the food development track.

Before the prize-giving ceremony, participants set up booths and wall posters inside Multipurpose Hall to introduce their innovative purple sweet potato products and strategies used to sell the potatoes in the market.
Present at the ceremony were I Culture Bhd Executive Director Tan Hui Sean, I Culture Bhd Executive Director Yip Weng Chun, UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, the sponsors of the competition, representative of Loh Bak Kim, Loh Siu Tzung; Wendy Tan Lay Hui, Goh Chin Choon, FBF Dean Assoc Prof Dr Au Yong Hui Nee, FBF Deputy Dean for Academic Development and Undergraduate Programmes Dr Peter Tan Sin Howe, FBF Head of Department for Department of Marketing Choy Johnn Yee, FSc Dean Assoc Prof Dr Lim Tuck Meng, FSc lecturer Looi Sing Yan, FAS lecturer Teh Boon Teck and DSSC Kampar Campus representative and UTAR lecturer Kong Hoi Yoon.
In her speech, Tan said, “It was a pleasure to know that more than 100 UTAR students participated in this contest. Within 50 days, the marketing participants from five teams sold more than 1,000kg of potatoes. They have been pumping out plenty of innovative ideas and products which might, one day, be introduced to the local community or even to UTAR Hospital patients in the future. Hence, we would like to continue to work together with UTAR to reach a greater height together.”
Echoing the sentiment of Tan, Prof Dato’ Ewe in his speech, said, “I was very impressed by the participants’ showcase of creativity and innovative products. UTAR substantiated this collaborative importance with the signing of an MoU with I Culture Bhd on 31 December 2020. Since then, we have been continuously working together on many activities. UTAR is grateful to be able to join in this preservation effort through the competition. I hope that students will continue to show passion and devotion as they have plenty of potentials.” In addition, he also emphasised the significance of 4C (critical thinking, creative thinking, communicating and collaborating skills) in the modern world.
The ceremony came to its closing after the long-awaited prize-giving ceremony which saw the representatives from each faculty presenting prizes to the winners.
To mark the end of the overall ceremony, a group photography session was conducted.
