Enhancing digital literacy through competition
UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus and the Student Development Committee (SDC) organised “Are You Digitally Literate?” Competition 2.0, followed by a prize-giving ceremony on 9 September 2022. The virtual competition was spearheaded and conducted by CFS Kampar academic and SDC team leader Pan Wai Seng.
The main objectives of this competition were to challenge students’ digital literacy skills, especially on their understanding of the fundamental usage of productivity tools such as MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint, as well as to promote the use of MS Office Tools to students in a creative way.
Participants were required to answer 40 multiple-choice questions (13 MS Word, 13 MS Excel and 14 MS PowerPoint) of varying difficulty levels individually in a live-quiz form within two hours via the Quizizz platform. The time allocated for answering each question ranged from 20 to 45 seconds. The score obtained by the participants was determined by both the speed and accuracy of their answering. The leaderboard was mainly shown after every five questions for the participants to be aware of their latest rankings.
A total of 23 students from CFS Kampar participated in the competition. Pan first briefed the participants on the competition rules and ensured that all participants had joined the Quizizz using the given game code. The competition was then initiated after confirming that all the participants were ready to take on the challenge. Depending on the nature and the difficulty level of the questions, each participant was given the allocated time to answer every question before the team leader revealed the correct answer. To drive home the answers, Pan further demonstrated how the functions in question worked and explained the reasons behind the answers.
The competition ended with the declaration of winners, followed by a group photo session. In general, the competition received positive feedback from the participants. Most participants shared their engaging experience, opining that “it was a well-organised competition”, “good, exciting to play”, and they “had fun and learnt a lot”. Another comment shared was, “The explanation given after each question is clear”. The winner list is as follows:
