Anti-scam exhibition creates awareness among the public

Amid the rise of scamming cases among Malaysian, UTAR Faculty of Arts and Social Science’s (FAS) Department of Advertising in collaboration with the Cyber Crime Investigation Department (CCID) of Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM) and Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation (MCPF) successfully organised an exhibition titled “Anti-Scam Artwork Exhibition” from 17 to 23 September 2022 at Econsave Kampar.

Aimed to create awareness among the public on the tactics of scammers and on what to do after being scammed and the right channels to use in seeking redress, the one-week-long event attracted more than 3,000 visitors from the local community. Out of the 3,000 visitors, a total of 443 people participated in the survey conducted pertaining to anti-scam.  

The exhibition was officiated by FAS Dean Dr Lee Lai Meng representing UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, and Principal Assistant Director (Strategic Planning), Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) Bukit Aman ACP Lai Lee Ching. Also present at the opening ceremony were Officer in Charge of Police District (OCPD) Kampar Supt Mohamad Nazri bin Daud; Deputy Chief Officer, Commerical Crime, IPK Perak DSP Suraiya binti Ahmad; Strategic Planning, Commercial Crime Investigation Department, IPK Perak ASP Murphy anak Martin; Assistant School Liaison Officer UTAR Insp Chan Zhi Bin, police officers, UTAR staff and students as well as the members of the public.

The exhibition saw the display of more than 100 students’ artworks. Besides informational artworks, students’ sketches and gimmicks during the launching ceremony were also the highlights of this exhibition. The exhibition achieved its objectives as the members from PDRM extended their good feedback about the quality of the students’ printed and digital artworks.

The Organising Chairperson of the Anti-Scam Artwork Exhibition and FAS Deputy Dean for Academic Development and Undergraduate Programmes, Ts Dr Khor Kheng Kia said, “UTAR is thankful to our co-organisers and sponsors for making this exhibition possible.” The event benefitted the participants in taking precautionary measures by sharing information with their loved ones to avoid becoming the victim of scams.

On behalf of UTAR, Dr Lee enthused, “UTAR is indeed very grateful to be part of this meaningful exhibition. The exhibition was really a great platform to raise awareness about the scamming cases among the members of the public.”
