UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus successfully organised two talks and one workshop titled “The Science Behind Hollywood Movies”, “The Joy of Physics” and “Secondary Writing Workshop” at SMK Kampong Kastam on 23 September 2022. A total of 75 students participated in the talks and workshop.

The talk titled “The Science Behind Hollywood Movies” was conducted by CFS Kampar Campus academic Voon Kah Loon. Voon started the talk by explaining the difference between Hollywood and Hollywood movies. The students were then exposed to the knowledge of DNA and how dinosaurs were recreated in the movie titled “Jurassic World”. Voon also shared about genetic engineering and viral vector.

On the other hand, CFS Kampar Campus academic Lee Phui Han spoke on “The Joy of Physics”. He elucidated the meaning of physics and provided examples of physics in daily life. He then introduced several physics experiments which can be conducted at home. He also highlighted the significance of physics and its applications in various fields.

Meanwhile, the workshop titled “Secondary Writing Workshop” was conducted by CFS Kampar Campus academics Siti Sarah binti Muhamad Azmi, Chung Zi Ling and G. Kanimozhi and moderated by CFS Kampar Campus academic Lim Kun Yin. The first speaker, Chung began her part on Writing Construction, which consisted of an explanation of the formats of Paper 2 (Writing) for SPM. She then provided insights on the recommended writing styles, including the do’s and don’ts.

Next, the second speaker, Kanimozhi continued with her part on the creative ways to learn vocabulary. She explained some effective approaches to pick up and remember new vocabulary. She also suggested some movies that students could use to learn English. Siti Sarah then carried out an interactive lyric writing activity with the students. The workshop ended with a souvenir exchange ceremony and a group photography session.

The talks and workshop received positive responses from the students. They commented that the talks aroused their interest and curiosity in Biology and Physics. Besides, they also cited that the workshop was beneficial and they were able to learn English in an interesting and fun way.
