Walking through the law series raises funds for UTAR Hospital

To create proper awareness and address the social welfare and legal issues plaguing students, young adults, and community today, UTAR Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) organised a talk series, titled “Walking Through the Law Series” at UTAR Kampar Campus from 25 August 2022 to 9 September 2022.

The Walking Through the Law Series was a series of inspirational, educative, and instructive talks in Mandarin presented by Dr Lau Say Min Claudia, an academic from UTAR Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM). It was opened to UTAR staff and students as well as the local community.

Dr Lau is not only an experienced law lecturer with intensive industrial experience, but also a social worker who protects and helps unfortunate women and vulnerable groups in society.

Apart from creating awareness, the law series was also designed to cover areas of law that most individuals are likely to encounter in their various stages of life. The talk aimed to share educational knowledge and information, common offences, relevant laws, and punishment to enlighten individuals and empower them to actualise their legal rights in everyday living.

A total of four talks, titled “The Truth Behind the Puppy Love”, “A Journey to Meet Love”, “Romantic Suicidal” and “Fair-weather Love” were conducted on 25 August 2022, 26 August 2022, 8 September 2022 and 9 September 2022 respectively. The talks received overwhelming responses from more than 150 participants including UTAR staff, students and members of the public.

After each talk, there was a question-and-answer session followed by a lucky draw. There were three lucky draw winners for each talk.

Besides being an informative talk series, the series also aimed to raise funds for the development of UTAR Hospital. The organising committee successfully raised a total of RM4,320 from selling the tickets. The amount will be channelled to UTAR Education Foundation.

The talk series received positive feedback from the participants. A UTAR staff said that the event was useful and it benefited him in understanding how laws can influence his daily life. Additionally, a student said that the talk was quite informative and that she gained a lot of new knowledge. Last but not least, a member of the public shared that the speaker was very professional and passionate; he said that he is looking forward to attending the next sharing session by the speaker.
