Community outreach programme in Tamil primary school
The M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS)’s Department of Nursing and Department of Population Medicine, and UTAR Department of Student Affairs (DSA) of Sungai Long Campus jointly organised a community outreach programme in collaboration with Persatuan Kebajikan Yenippadigal Kuala Lumpur (PKYKL) on 14 September 2022 at SKJT Ladang Kubang, Nilai.
The programme was an initiative to give back to the community. It aimed to increase the participants’ knowledge and share information on ways to maintain a healthy body, both physically and mentally. The programme consisted of a yoga session conducted by MK FMHS lecturer Thulasy Perumal to promote body and mind balance through yoga. The yoga session saw participants learning some basic yoga poses or also known as asanas. Hygiene was also taught to the participants during the hand-washing activity conducted by MK FMHS lecturer Sheela Devi Sukuru and nurse II Mekala Perumal. The participants enjoyed checking their hands under the hand glow machine before and after washing. They also understood the importance of maintaining hygiene and learnt ways to integrate it into their daily routine. The final activity saw participants enjoying expressive art, conducted by DSA counsellor Navamani Nagappon. The expressive art session aimed to provide a platform for participants to express their creativity and emotions through drawing and colouring activities.
A group photograph ended the outreach programme. Principal of SKJT Ladang Kubang Tamilchelvi Govindaraj expressed her heartfelt appreciation to PKYKL and UTAR for organising the activities. The feedback from the students and the teachers was indeed positive.
