Kuen Cheng High School students learn about university life in UTAR

A group of students from Kuen Cheng High School paid a visit to UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 8 October 2022. The visit saw a total of 42 Form Four students from the Science stream participating in a campus tour as well as talk and workshop sessions. The objectives of the visit were to develop an interest in science and engineering-related programmes among the secondary school students and provide them with an opportunity to experience university life.

The visit kicked off with a group photography session, followed by a quick campus tour, where the students were able to see the library and the murals around the campus. From there, they were given a briefing by Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) lecturer Dr Goh Choon Hian and a talk by Ts Dr Lee Jer Vui, introducing them to UTAR and LKC FES programmes.

After the talk by Dr Lee, the students split into four groups, each led by a supervisor, as they participated in workshops, talks and demonstration sessions at different stations. Each station had a lecturer in charge from the Department of Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Mechanical & Materials Engineering, and Department of Surveying. The students learned about many new topics during the visit, including Human Biomechanics, designing and fabricating keychains using AutoCAD and Laser Cutting Machine, scanning Electron Microscope Imaging, etc. They were also introduced Quantity Surveying profession.

Overall, the visit was a success and the students managed to gain much insightful knowledge about the university as well as science and engineering-related programmes offered by the university.
