STEM workshop and complimentary healthcare services for the community

With the aim of giving back to the community, UTAR organised a STEM workshop under the UTAR “We Care, We Act” New Village Community Service Project at SJKC Chee Chuin Sagil, Johor on 13 August 2022. In addition to the workshop, free healthcare services were also provided by UTAR Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine students for the residents in that area.

The workshop saw the participation of 53 primary school students from SJKC Chee Chuin, Sagil, Johor; 18 primary school students from SJKC Kebun Bahru, Johor; 15 primary school students from SJKC Lian Hwa, Kg Teratai, Johor and eight primary school students from SJKC Chung Hwa Asahan, Melaka.

In her speech, Madam Wong Siew Keep, the principal of SJKC Chee Chuin Sagil, Johor mentioned that due to the pandemic situation, holding a physical STEM workshop was a rare opportunity. Hence, she thanked the UTAR volunteers for organising the STEM workshop and providing her students with the opportunity to gain new knowledge.

A total of six station games were held based on the principles of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Among the activities organised were “Salt Painting”, “Oil Spill”, “Monkey Game”, “Mathematics Snowball”, “Newton Gone Wrong” and “Invisible Ink”. The workshop saw the participation of 24 student volunteers from UTAR.

Healthcare services such as Ophthalmology, Internal Medicine, and Acupuncture treatment were also provided, free of charge, for elderly people. The services were offered by student volunteers from UTAR Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine. They were led by UTAR Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine lecturer Woo Tiam Hee. The free clinic service was open to all residents, especially the elderly people living nearby the new villages.

The event was co-organised by SJKC Chee Chuin, Sagil, Johor, SJKC Kebun Bahru, Johor, SJKC Lian Hwa, Kg Teratai, Johor, SJKC Chung Hwa Asahan, Melaka and UTAR.
