STEM Outreach for SMK Cheras Jaya and Kuen Cheng High School students

The UTAR STEM Outreach organised a “STEM Outreach” programme for thirty-five secondary school students from SMK Cheras Jaya and thirty-seven Senior 3 students from Kuen Cheng High School on 22 July 2023. The objective of the event was to stimulate secondary school students’ interest towards STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

The programme featured workshop sessions that involved STEM-related lessons and activities. Prior to the workshops, students from both schools were given an introduction about the available programmes at UTAR as well as a sharing on university life by the Division of Programme Promotion. Apart from that, all students participated in the campus tour to explore the facilities within the campus.

In the workshop, students from SMK Cheras Jaya learnt how to make DIY hand gel sanitiser and paper circuits as a 3D greeting card. The facilitators were academics from the Centre for Foundation Studies of Sungai Long Campus R. Precilla, Sharifah Edayu binti Syed Monudeen Khan, Farhanah Azwanee binti Mohd Ali Chooi, Noor Shafryna binti Salleh, Teen Soh Hong, Nur Amalina Hafiza binti Ahmad Nizar, Tan Zhen Jee, Liang Chooi Ling and Ngo Siau Woon.

Meanwhile, the thirty-seven students from Kuen Cheng High School learnt about the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide using different catalysts and creating bioplastics from milk and vinegar. The workshop was conducted by Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science academics Dr Yap Yeow Hong and Dr Woo Kwan Kit.
