The Department of International Business of the Faculty of Accountancy and Management (FAM) organised a talk titled “The What and Why of Globalisation” on 20 February 2023 at Sungai Long Campus. It was presented by WOG Controls (M) Sdn Bhd Director Juelie Koh Ung Ung, who is also the industry advisor for the Bachelor of International Business (Honours) programme.

The talk, which saw about 100 participants, aimed to enhance students’ learning process by exposing them to real-world situations and preparing them for the workplace. The event also aimed to bridge the gap between academia and the industry to increase the involvement of industry professionals at the university.

In the talk, Juelie Koh spoke about the globalisation era, the importance of globalisation, the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation, deglobalisation, and the skills needed in the current job market. Juelie Koh said, “Without people, there is no globalisation. Deglobalisation is unlikely to happen as consumerism will not let globalisation extinct.”

During the talk, Juelie Koh explained the concept of globalisation in relation to the process of how products are made from raw materials. She said, “For a simple cotton t-shirt, the cotton may have been harvested in China, where the fluff is separated from the seeds and pressed into bales before it is sent to the textile mills in India for the spinning process, which turns the bales into yarn, to be treated, bleached and dyed. The cloth will then be sent to Bangladesh where the fabric is cut and sewn into t-shirts before they are sent to Sri Lanka to be processed and transported to the United Kingdom for point of sale.”

Speaking of employability skills, Juelie Koh said, “It is important to discover the types of employability skills that the employers look for and also relevant to the job market. Students can gain skills from work-based learning such as industrial attachments and other opportunities. The current employers are looking for people with strong wills, critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills. Soft skills can help you communicate effectively, demonstrate professionalism and develop business relationships.”

The sharing session ended with a Q&A session.
