In conjunction with the celebration of Independence Day, UTAR Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) successfully organised a gotong-royong programme titled “Fostering the spirit of unity in society” at Kampar Fire and Rescue Station, Perak on 27 August 2022. The event involved ten students and 36 staff from UTAR FBF. They were also accompanied by a group of firefighters from Kampar.
Aligned with SDG 11— Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 17— Partnerships to Achieve the Goal, the programme aimed to build excellent unity among UTAR students, staff, firefighters and the local community while enhancing the level of cleanliness and cheerfulness in the workplace. It also aimed to foster high principles among the participants.
Upon the arrival of participants to Kampar Fire and Rescue Station, the activity began with a welcome speech by Head of Fire and Rescue Station Tuan Mohd Hisyam bin Zakariah, followed by a souvenir presentation session and a photography session. After that, the programme continued with various community activities such as painting the fences and walls, disposing of wastes, pruning trees and mowing the lawns in the surrounding areas. The project was led by FBF lecturer Nur Diyana binti Ismail.
The participants were divided into two teams. During the endeavour, the teams also helped the firefighters to hang the Malaysian flags on the wall after completing the painting task.
The activity came to a close after four hours. Overall, the gotong-royong activity was successful as the surrounding areas were cleaned up splendidly. It acted as a catalyst for the participants to be determined in carrying the social responsibility of preserving and conserving the environment within themselves.
