A talk titled “Astronomy around you & astronomical
big data and citizen science” was organised by UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty
of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) along with The Institution of
Engineering and Technology (IET), the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and
Computing Applications (CAICA), and UTAR Astronomy Club on 29 May 2023 at
UTAR Sungai Long Campus.
The talk was delivered by the National Astronomical
Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences Associate Researcher Dr Fan
Dongwei. It attracted the participation of many students and alumni who were
interested in astronomy. Also, present at the talk was LKC FES Deputy Dean
for Student Development and Industrial Training Assoc Prof Ts Dr Lee Kim
Yee.
During the talk, Dr Fan shared the involvement of
Chinese astronomy in various fields, including the entertainment industry
with the production of the movie “The Wandering Earth”, research related to
the orbit of Mars and the moon and so on. He also explained that astronomy
can benefit various industries such as energy development and medical
health. He also introduced the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio
Telescope (FAST), a radio telescope of the National Astronomical Observatory
of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Last but not least, Dr Fan’s talk
included a discussion on the impact of the light on astronomy, which
can lead to astronomical crises.
The talk ended with a Q&A session.
