UTAR Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Sungai Long (SL) Campus
organised an art exhibition and competition from 17 April to 14 July 2023 at
level 9 concourse area of KB block.
There were 114 pieces of artwork produced by participants who took Figure
Drawing in the 202301 Trimester. Participants drew the faces of the CFS-SL
staff members. Visitors who went to the exhibition looked at the drawings
and guessed the staff member by filling in a Google Form, while the
particulars of the staff members were displayed at the exhibition. The
winners were chosen based on how close their drawings resemble the real face
of the staff member and the prizes were awarded in the form of marks added
to their final assignments.
On
the last day of the art exhibition, there was a prize-giving ceremony for
the winners, who were voted by the visitors for their drawings. The prizes
were presented by CFS Director Melissa Stefanie Netto, who was accompanied
by CFS lecturer Abdolrasool Taghvaee. The first prize was won by Cherry
Chuah Yu Tong, followed by Ng Tian En and Lai Mei Ting in the second and
third places respectively.
Second-prize winner, Ng said, “It is a great honour to win second place in
this drawing competition. Painting is the way people express beauty. I once
thought of giving up, but my original intention made me persevere. I would
like to thank my parents, teacher, and my partner. They are a bright light
on my way of painting, and they gave me advice when I was lost. Thanks to
those who voted for me and affirmed me. I will continue to do my best in the
future.”
Third-prize winner, Lai said, “Art calms me from the chaotic environment. I
enjoyed the downtime I spent while creating this piece of art. I can feel
that I am constantly evolving and developing in this dynamic team, and I had
such a great opportunity to meet a lot of kind people along the way. When we
communicate, we should step out of our comfort zone and get as close to our
surroundings as possible. This might help us learn many lessons from our
lives; UTAR offers a lot of opportunities that students can easily grasp.”
The art exhibition and competition aimed to allow participants to display
their works to a wider audience, which helped to build their confidence and
recognition. Besides that, the exhibition encouraged students to explore
their creativity and try new things, which fostered innovation and growth,
while at the same time, bringing students, academicians and other members of
the community together to celebrate and support the achievements of the
students. Lastly, through the exhibition, the students were exposed to
learning about different aspects of organising an event, such as planning,
promoting, and setting up an exhibition.
