The annual event, Insight 2023, finally made its much-awaited comeback. Organised by the Department of Chemical Engineering of UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES), the event took place at UTAR Sungai Long Campus.

Bearing the theme ‘The Voyage’, Insight 2023 was meticulously planned for a span of four days. The first day of the event, which fell on 20 July 2023, was dedicated to the Exhibition. On the second day, 21 July 2023, the focus shifted to the Process Plant Design and Case Study Competition, where participants demonstrated their skills and creativity. The third day (22 July 2023) was filled with excitement as Carnival Journival took centre stage, offering an array of fun games and activities. An Appreciation Dinner was hosted on the fourth day, concluding the event on a high note with recognition and gratitude for all the involved parties.

The opening ceremony was held on 20 July 2023 at the Multipurpose Hall (MPH) of Sungai Long Campus. Present were LKC FES Dean Assoc Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She, Department of Chemical Engineering Head Dr Mah Shee Keat, LKC FES academic Dr Ng Yee Sern, Sincerely Dyeing & Finishing Sdn Bhd HR and Admin Assistant Manager Kong Siew Hoi and Insight 2023 Chairperson Tiew Cheng Siang.

Dr Yap, in his welcome speech, said, “Insight 2023 is not just another event; it is a platform where innovations, collaborations and the pursuit of knowledge come together to shape the future of the engineering industry. This gathering signifies the tremendous progress and milestones we have achieved in the field of chemical engineering, and we are privileged to have a number of exhibitors from the engineering industry. Your presence today highlights your commitment to nurturing and developing our next generation of engineers, empowering them to think critically and creatively to tackle the complex challenges of the future.”

Two exciting competitions took place on the second day of Insight 2023. The first competition was called Process Plant Design Competition, which was held in the morning. It was followed by the Case Study Competition, which took place in the evening.

The Process Plant Design Competition required participants to form groups and display their creativity by selecting a topic and constructing an impressive plant model on a 60 cm x 60 cm base. Before the event, they had to submit a Process Flow Diagram (PFD) along with a captivating photo booklet. On the day of the competition, the teams presented their plant models and posters, and prepared engaging PPT slides for the judges’ evaluation. The Case Study Competition saw participants conducting comprehensive studies on assigned topics. They brainstormed and devised innovative technical solutions to overcome similar incidents. Their insightful findings were presented to the esteemed judges through well-prepared PPT presentations.

The stakes were high, as the Champion of each competition received an impressive prize package, which included cash rewards (RM1,000 for the Process Plant Design Competition and RM700 for the Case Study Competition), tickets to the Insight Appreciation dinner, delightful goodies bags, and prestigious award certificates.

A total of six teams participated in the Process Plant Design Competition. One team came from Heriot-Watt University Malaysia Campus, another from UCSI, and four from UTAR. Likewise, six teams participated in the Case Study Competition, with two from UCSI and four from UTAR. After an intense day of competition, the results were as follows:
