UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat was
invited to present a keynote speech at the “International Symposium on
Maternal Culture and Family Education” in Zoucheng, Shandong, China on 19
May 2023. The title of his keynote speech was “Family Education and
Cultivation in the Era of AI”. Accompanying Prof Dato’ Ewe at the event was
UTAR Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) Dean Assoc Prof Dr Chong Siou Wei.
Organised by Nishan World Center for Confucian
Studies, the Chinese Society of Shixue and Jining People’s Government, along
with the Mencius Institute, Zoucheng People’s Government and UTAR, the
symposium was held with the guidance of the International Confucian
Association.
At the opening ceremony of the symposium, UTAR signed
an agreement with Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies to jointly
establish a sub-centre at UTAR. The signatories were Prof Dato’ Ewe and
Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies Deputy Director Liu Tingshan. The
Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies sub-centre will mainly focus on
Confucianism research, besides organising academic and cultural exchange
activities related to cultural transmission, Chinese studies, Chinese
teaching and research, the comparison of Chinese and Western philosophy,
etc.
Prof Dato’ Ewe also took the opportunity to sign a
memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Mencius Institute to promote
Confucianism studies. Representing Mencius Institute at the signing ceremony
was its Dean Chen Xiaoxia.
After the symposium, Prof Dato’ Ewe and Dr Chong were
also invited to attend a ceremony to commemorate Mencius and the mother of
Mencius on the same day.
