Visit by representatives of Embassy of China to Malaysia

Representatives from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia (Embassy of China to Malaysia), namely Counsellor for Science Dr Zhao Xiangdong and Second Secretary Zhang Tianhang visited UTAR Sungai Long Campus on 19 June 2023. During the visit, a meeting was held to discuss the strengthening of collaboration in the areas of science and technology between the universities of China and UTAR.

Present at the meeting were UTAR Council Member and UTAR Hospital Board Chairman Ir Academician Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dato’ Dr Chuah Hean Teik, UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (MK FMHS) Dean Academician Emeritus Prof Dr Cheong Soon Keng, Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Assoc Prof Ir Dr Ling Lloyd, Division of Community and International Networking Director Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn and ASEAN Academy of Engineering & Technology (AAET) Executive Secretary Dr Fok Kuk Fai.

Also present via Microsoft Teams were Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology Dean Ir Prof Dr Ng Choon Aun, Faculty of Information and Communication Technology Dean Prof Ts Dr Liew Soung Yue and Faculty of Science Dean Assoc Prof Dr Lim Tuck Meng.

Dr Zhao praised UTAR for sustaining the Chinese language and culture on campus and expressed his intention to explore research concerning science and technology at UTAR. He also wished to seek further collaboration with UTAR.

Tan Sri Chuah, on the other hand, welcomed the representatives and introduced the structure and history of UTAR. In the meantime, Prof Dato’ Ewe took the opportunity to highlight the various collaborations UTAR has with China institutions. 

During the meeting, Tan Sri  Chuah and Prof Dato’ Ewe were also seen introducing the various faculties in UTAR and explaining the current status and research in UTAR Belt and Road Strategic Research Centre. Other than that, Dr Zhao was able to learn about the different types of primary and secondary schools in Malaysia and the graduate employability of UTAR.

The visit ended with a group photography session. It was followed by a tour of the LKC FES and MK FMHS laboratories.
