AAET Distinguished Lecture explores the wonders of engineering and technology

UNESCO, at its 40th session of the general conference, decided to dedicate a day to celebrate engineers and their achievements in changing the world for the better through engineering. Since then, the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development has been celebrated on the 4th of March every year since 2020.

As part of World Engineering Day 2023, the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET) organised the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET) Distinguished Lecture on 11 March 2023 via Zoom to celebrate and remember the importance of engineering as well as its contributions. The lecture was hosted by the AAET Country Operation Unit of Myanmar.

UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, who is also the president of AAET, was invited to share his congratulatory remark at the opening ceremony. The event also saw Union Minister for Industry, Patron of Myanmar Engineering Council Prof Dr Charlie Than and Prof Dr Sein Myint delivering their opening remark and closing remark respectively.

Prof Dato’ Ewe explaining the importance of engineering and technology

Prof Dato’ Ewe, in his speech, congratulated AAET for making another successful distinguished lecture and the Patrons for their endless support towards AAET. “I truly hope all the participants will be inspired and encouraged to explore the wonders of engineering and technology, and ultimately, to play your part in contributing towards making the world a better place through engineering and technology,” he added.

Sharing the importance of engineering and technology, he said, “With the fast-paced modernisation process that is transforming our society today, we see greater importance of engineering and technology in supporting our communities and economies. From smart cars to travelling in space; access to safe water and electricity; and from infrastructure to healthcare, engineering and technology have impacted the way our world works, which also highlights the need for continuous innovation.”

Prof Dato’ Ewe emphasised, “We need engineers more than ever because they play a key role in shaping our future, and more importantly, they are at the forefront of innovation by producing creative ideas, developing new solutions, and even improving existing solutions, so problems and challenges can be overcome, ultimately leading to more sustainable impacts and development for the world.”

He continued to share the role of AAET, “In our effort to contribute towards engineering and technology, AAET has also played its role through the AAET Distinguished Lecture Programme by organising these public lectures since 2010, with the aim of promoting the importance of engineering sciences, technology, and innovation to ASEAN young graduates and young entrepreneurs. With this, I truly hope all the participants will be inspired and encouraged to explore the wonders of engineering and technology, and ultimately play their part in contributing towards making the world a better place.”

Dr Aung sharing his insight on “Seismic Hazard and Vulnerability Assessment for Bagan/Nyaung U Area”

The event continued with a lecture by AAET Vice President and Chairman of Country Operation Unit, AAET, Myanmar Prof Dr Aung Kyaw Myat. His distinguished lecture was titled “Seismic Hazard and Vulnerability Assessment for Bagan/Nyaung U Area”.

Prof Aung’s lecture brought insights into ways engineering can help the society and economy; knowledge on engineering capacity in developing strategic frameworks, and the best practices for implementing engineering solutions for sustainable development. His lecture covered introduction; aims; seismicity around the Bagan/Nyaung U Area; significant ground shakings on historical monuments; development of seismic hazard and vulnerability assessment, and recommendation.

Prof Aung’s lecture also educated participants on technopreneurship, STEM education and knowledge, and sustainable development. It also spurred their interests and encouraged career aspirations in engineering and technology. More than that, participants also received an enhanced understanding of ways engineering and technology are central to modern life and sustainable development.

The lecture adjourned with an intensive Q&A session and a group photography session.
