Twelve students from UTAR made a trip to Taman Tugu Nursery, Kuala Lumpur on
24 February 2023 to participate in the Nature Education Programme offered by
Free Tree Society, an NGO well-known for promoting native plants to increase
biodiversity and dealing with climate change.
Held in partnership with Taman Tugu Project Development Sdn Bhd, the
programme was sponsored by CIMB Islamic Bank Bhd.
The programme began with a guided walk at one of the trails in Taman Tugu.
The walk was led by General Manager & Pulai Trail Programme Manager Carolyn
Lau. Throughout the walk, students learned about the different layers of
forests and how they contribute to a variety of flora and fauna that keep
our ecosystem in balance while protecting the environment. “They are crucial
in dealing with climate change and calling for a sustainable solution,”
Carolyn Lau explained. The students also learned how the forest floor,
filled with decomposed dried leaves and tree branches, contributes to
healthy soil.
A workshop on plant propagation was held for students to learn how to
propagate and water the plants properly. The workshop was led by Taman Tugu
Programme Manager Li Yin. The students spent over an hour propagating and
watering plants while learning the importance of organic waste and
composting.
UTAR would like to thank Free Tree Society for providing the students with
an eye-opening experience.
