UTAR signs collaboration agreement with Xiao En KL Berhad

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Xiao En KL Berhad signed a collaboration agreement on 30 March 2023 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. The collaboration intends to raise funds to support the continuous development and operations of the UTAR Hospital in Kampar, Perak.

Premised on the vision of “Building People – Building Community – Building Legacy”, Xiao En KL Berhad agrees that all profit after tax from the sale of rights of use of urn compartment in the 5th floor of the newest columbarium project, Xiao En Tower of Light (孝恩和光阁), will be donated to support UTAR Hospital.

Xiao En Group Chairwoman & Founder Datin Choo Lein Sei Keng, Xiao En Group Managing Director Dato’ Frank Choo Chuo Siang and UTAR Education Foundation Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman Tan Sri Dato' Dr Sak Cheng Lum represented both parties to sign the collaboration agreement. Witnessing the signing of the collaboration agreement was UTAR Education Foundation BOT Member Datuk Lee Leck Cheng.

Also present at the signing ceremony were UTAR Chancellor Tun Dr Ling Liong Sik, his wife Toh Puan Ena Ling, Puan Sri Irene Sak, UTAR Council Chairman Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr Ting Chew Peh, UTAR Education Foundation BOT member Emeritus Prof Dato’ Dr Tan Chong Tin, UTAR Council member Datuk Lim Si Cheng, UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, UTAR Vice President for Student Development and Alumni Relations Prof Dr Choong Chee Keong, Dean of M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Emeritus Prof Dr Cheong Soon Keng, Xiao En Group Director of Planning and Design Mr Keng Choo Cheng Siong, Director of Sales & Marketing Ms Nancy Choo Yuen Sze and Xiao En KL Berhad Executive Director Ms Wong Huey Miin and Tower of Light architect Ar Axxu Hoi.

Xiao En Tower of Light is situated in Cheras area of Kuala Lumpur. It being strategically located near the Cheras Christian Cemetery, DBKL Cheras Crematorium and Xiao En Centre which is comprised of funeral parlours, Tower of Light will complete the service value chain from funerals, cremation to burial, in the region, making the last journey for sending off departed loved ones a wholesome experience for the bereaved families. Xiao En Tower of Light is the first city columbarium in Malaysia which adopts sustainability as its mission, including environmental and social aspects.

Dato’ Frank Choo represented Xiao En Group to deliver a speech. He said, “With over 35 years of experience in the bereavement care industry, Xiao En believes that this life care business is perpetual in nature. Our new project Xiao En Tower of Light not only pursues environmental sustainability, but also redefines the architectural design for a multi-storey columbarium. It will be a spiritual place for remembering the deceased and comforting their living loved ones, as well as a venue for life education and community service to be practised. In the future, Xiao En Group hopes this building can give back to the community sustainably. We also wish to support the UTAR Hospital as a corporate initiative to give back to the community.”

Dato’ Frank Choo delivered a speech

Tan Sri Sak said, “Based on the visuals presented by the architect, this is a beautiful columbarium with a unique design concept and name— Tower of Light. I would like to congratulate Datin Choo, Dato’ Frank Choo and the team for setting up this Tower of Light project. I look forward to a win-win situation under this collaboration and all the best for a successful venture.”

Tan Sri Sak delivered a speech

Prof Dato’ Ewe said, “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Xiao En Group for their kindness in initiating this fundraising project for the UTAR hospital. The building of the UTAR Hospital is one of the most important initiatives of our university to give back to society. Therefore, the UTAR Hospital is not a short-term project; it needs to rely on the support from all walks of life to make the hospital a sustainable medical institution.”

The land area of the Xiao En Tower of Light is approximately 4,348 square metres of land, with a total gross floor area of at least 30,000 square metres. It is expected to be completed in four years. The building has a full height of 15 floors, with 11 floors dedicated as a columbarium for storing human cremated remains. There are also four floors of communal space for services and facilities such as inurnment service, Buddhist rituals, worship, hospitality, sales, food and a multipurpose hall. There are also three basement levels comprising of car parks.
