CEE organises English Language Camp for Form Six students

CEE instructors, SMK Seri Budiman teachers, UTAR student helpers and SMK Seri Budiman students

The Centre for Extension Education (CEE) of Kampar Campus organised an English Language Camp on 21 March 2023 for Form 6 students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Budiman in Gerik, Perak. The objective of the camp was to educate, promote and develop the school students’ English communication skills. A total of 82 students participated in the camp.

The camp kickstarted with a brief overview of the programmes and courses offered at UTAR by CEE English Unit Head P. Mohanambikay. It was followed by a tutelage session on subject-verb agreement in English grammar by CEE Instructor Elene Cheong Yong Yong. The lesson aimed to expose participants to the fundamentals of the grammatical concept.

After a quick break, the second segment of the camp resumed with the students engaging in a series of entertaining English game stations conducted by CEE Instructor Beh Heng Jian. The programme was jam-packed with activities and games, designed to provide students with an overview of the exciting and entertaining aspects of the English language, not only for academic purposes but also to instil confidence in students so that they can become confident and proficient English speakers. Indirectly, the camp also helped UTAR student helpers to improve and enrich their soft skills.

Students diligently finding for clues to solve the crime case

One of the highlights of the game session was the murder mystery case where students were divided into nine groups and moved between stations to collect clues and alibi. Each station featured a range of English-language activities meant to foster teamwork and critical thinking, which the participants engaged in under the guidance of CEE instructors and UTAR student helpers. It was an enjoyable session for both participants and volunteers.

The pinnacle of the event was the prize-giving ceremony and the closing session. Madam Maznah Abdullah, the principal of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Budiman, Gerik, as well as Mr Alvin D’Cruz Balan, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Seri Budiman MUET teacher, gave a brief speech to thank UTAR for organising the English Camp.

It is hoped that the meaningful knowledge exchange motivated the students to use English in their daily activities to become better English language users in the future.
