The UTAR STEM Outreach organised a workshop titled “Soap Lab 2023” for the students of Science and Mathematics Society of SMJK Yu Hua, Kajang on 15 April 2023. A total of 29 students, ranging from 13 to 17 years old, participated in the event.

The workshop was divided into two sessions; English Lab and Science Lab. The workshop was conducted by Centre for Foundation Studies academic staff Gs Ts Amelia Chiang Kar Mun, Anussyia Muthiah and Christina John from Sungai Long Campus.

During the English Lab session, the students were given the opportunity to practise their speaking, listening, and comprehension skills. They also practised their English language skills by asking and answering questions, giving directions and discussing the soap-making process with their peers.

On the other hand, the Science Lab session saw facilitators sharing with students “Know-how to make your own soap” from scratch using various techniques and ingredients. The workshop also covered the basics of soap making, where students learned about the equipment and tools required to make soap, as well as, the safety precautions to consider when handling lye. At the end of the workshop, the students had the opportunity to bring home their own handmade soap.

Overall, the STEM Outreach programme provided the school students with a chance to further explore fields related to STEM. They gained valuable knowledge and experience through the activities and workshops.
