The biannual Final Year Project (FYP) Poster
Competition and Industry Interaction Day (IID) for Jan 2023 trimester was
once again organised by UTAR Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and
Science (LKC FES) on 27 April 2023 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus, coordinated
by Assoc Prof Ts Dr Lee Kim Yee, LKC FES Deputy Dean for Student Development
and Industrial Training and Chairperson of LKC FES External Relations
Committee (ERC). It was a combined event between the FYP committee and ERC
in LKC FES. The FYP poster
competition was chaired by Assoc Prof Ir Dr Lim Boon Han, while
Dr Low Jen Hahn is the Organising
Chair for the IID.
The main objectives of the competition were to
provide an opportunity for the final year students to demonstrate their
independence, originality and ethics; cultivate research interests among LKC
FES students; prepare the students for a real competitive environment; train
students to showcase their talent, skills and ideas through their projects,
and motivate students to participate in external competitions, win awards,
and raise UTAR’s name.
Overall, it saw a total of 70 shortlisted posters
under nine different tracks, out of 647 poster submissions by 707 students
from various LKC FES departments. The nine tracks were Track One: Department
of Architecture & Sustainable Design (DASD), Track Two: Department of
Mathematics and Actuarial Science (DMAS), Track Three: Department of
Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering (DMBE), Track Four: Department of
Electrical and Electronic Engineering (DEE), Track Five: Department of
Internet Engineering and Computer Science (DIECS), Track Six: Department of
Surveying (DS), Track Seven: Department of Civil Engineering (DCI), Track
Eight: Department of Mechanical and Material Engineering (DMME) and Track
Nine: Department of Chemical Engineering (DCL).
The posters were evaluated by a total of 23 judges
based on the poster’s appearance, content and organisation, as well as the
student’s oral presentation. The top three posters under each track were
awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes, which were RM200, RM120 and RM80
respectively. All the participants also received a certificate of
participation. Furthermore, the winner of the Most-liked Poster Award, which
is the poster with the most likes on Facebook, was awarded a cash prize of
RM150 and a certificate.

LKC FES Dean Assoc Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She delivered a
speech at the competition’s prize-giving ceremony, thanking the judges and
congratulating the participants. “I am glad that we are able to organise
this competition for the second time since the pandemic occurred. I feel
proud seeing the posters; their content has increased in depth of
presentation and expanse of knowledge, thus I would like to congratulate all
the students for their incredible efforts in creating their posters, and I
hope that you will take this opportunity to network and learn from each
other and with all the companies in attendance.”
Dr Yap was congratulating the
participants and thanking all the parties involved
He added, “I would also like to show my gratitude to
the judges for taking the time to help us with the selection of winners and
for providing advice to the students on how they can improve. Finally, to
all our industry partners who have set up their booths here today, thank you
for sharing your information with our students and staff. Industry input
creates a healthy balance for our students and staff, and allows our
students to learn about the latest demands and trends that are beneficial
for them when they graduate.” Also present at the ceremony were Assoc Prof
Ts Dr Lee Kim Yee, Dr Lim Boon Han, Dr Low Jen Hahn, LKC FES lecturers and
students, UTAR IEM Student Chapter Advisor Dr Kwong Kok Zee and UTAR IEM
