4AASC explores bamboo for sustainable design

With the aim to reconnect and foster collaborations between UTAR and MoU partner universities, the 4TH Asian Architecture Students’ Colloquium (4AASC), was organised by the Centre of Sustainable Design and Built Environment (COSBE) from 23 to 28 October 2023 at Tadom Hill Resort in Selangor.

The four-day bamboo workshop, themed Sustainable Design with Bamboo, was the first international event held physically since the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. The hands-on workshop received support from staff and students of universities from China, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The students worked in teams to complete a bamboo structure, which will act as an emergency shelter. University Warmadewa emerged as the winner, defeating six other universities. After the workshop, the participants were taken on an educational tour to Kuala Lumpur. The event was technically supported amongst others, by the Malaysian Bamboo Society (MBS), the Architect Association of Malaysia (PAM) and Tadom Hill Resort. The organiser also expressed appreciation to all who supported the event, especially speakers and judges including Ar Adrianta Aziz, Dato’ Dr Marzalina binti Mansor, Ar Najib Ariffin, Alvin Lim and student helpers from UTAR Architecture Students Society (UAS).
