FEGT shares its passion for STEM with Keat Hwa High School, Kedah

The spirit of Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) abounded at Keat Hwa High School, Alor Setar, Kedah on 16 November 2023 as 100 Form One to Form Three students from Keat Hwa High School immersed themselves in the STEM workshop organised by UTAR Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT).

The workshop was well-received by the participating students. The principal of Keat Hwa High School, Madam Teresa Chang Siew Hong, expressed her joy and gratitude to the FEGT team, remarking that the students learned new knowledge during the workshop activities. She also expressed her wish for the workshop to be organised annually since the participating students showed excitement and enthusiasm towards the workshop activities.

The STEM workshop consisted of five main activities, namely “Can You Build?”, “Having Fun with Arduino”, “Soap Making”, “Preparation of Nylon via Condensation Polymerisation”, and “Epoxy Resin Holder”. The insightful and light-hearted activities not only exposed the students to various aspects of STEM, but also allowed the students to have hands-on experience suffused with fun moments.

During the workshop, FEGT academic Dr Leong Sim Siong gave a brief overview of the FEGT programmes to the students. FEGT academic Ir Dr Loh Siu Hong also enlightened the students on the benefits of the Work-Based Learning (WBL) programme offered in the FEGT Electronic Systems programme.

As gratitude for preserving the students’ passion for STEM, Madam Teresa Chang presented certificates and souvenirs to the participating UTAR staff and student helpers. In exchange, FEGT Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Dr Tan Kok Tat presented a token of appreciation to Madam Teresa Chang for her warm hospitality as well as her dedication to kindling students’ fervour in the field of STEM.
