Fostering STEM interest at Karnival Digital Perak 2023

The UTAR STEM Outreach introduced a new wave of innovations to the local community by promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) at Karnival Digital Perak 2023, which was held from 7 to 8 November 2023 at Terminal Bas Kampar Putra Sentral, Kampar. The event featured engaging sessions led by UTAR Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT) academics Dr Fityanul Akhya and Dr Shakiroh binti Khamis, and Division of Programme Promotion (DPP) Assistant Manager Mr Tham Yeong Shyue.

Dr Fityanul captivated the audience with practical applications of Computer Vision and Deep Learning. Demonstrating a futuristic underwater monitoring system for lobster cages, an android app for fish quality identification, and a surface defect detection system for sawn lumber, he showcased the breadth of possibilities within the STEM field. Most importantly, he addressed contemporary concerns by illustrating how technology, including Deep Learning, can aid in lung disease diagnosis and COVID-19 diagnosis. Last but not least, Dr Fityanul also presented the rain removal feature for video surveillance systems at the event.

Dr Shakiroh took a different route, unravelling the power of visualisation through Power BI. Her project included a Prescriptive Knowledge Visualisation System, which offered insights into students’ performances based on their internet usage behaviour. The integration of Power BI with Python became apparent in predicting a student’s behaviour and its influence on academic success. Closing the loop, Dr Shakiroh showcased the analysis and visualisation of Wifi usage as a tool to forecast student performance.

By bringing complex concepts down to earth, UTAR STEM Outreach and Karnival Digital Perak 2023 succeeded in fostering a sense of curiosity and innovation within the local community.
