Signing MoU and SEA with HNU

The signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) and student exchange agreement (SEA) between UTAR and Hainan University, China (HNU) was held on 25 November 2023 at UTAR Sungai Long Campus. The objectives of the MoU were to initiate joint international collaborative research projects and talent training programmes, facilitate academic development exchange, and initiate joint seminars, conferences, workshops and so on.

The representatives from HNU were the Chairman of the University Council Mr Fu Xuanguo, Vice President (Academic) and Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering, the Engineering Institute of Canada, and the Academia European Prof Dr Laurence T. Yang, Deputy Director of Office of International Cooperation and Exchange Dr Liu Liang, Director of Office of Alumni Relations and Advancement Mr Lin Shidao, Dean of School of Marine Science and Technology Prof Dr Shen Yijun and Dean of School of Tropical Agriculture and Forestry Prof Dr Miao Weiguo.

Present on behalf of UTAR were UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Dean of Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) Assoc Prof Dr Au Yong Hui Nee, Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Deputy Dean for R&D and Postgraduate Programmes Assoc Prof Ir Dr Ling Lloyd, Director of Division of Community and International Networking (DCInterNet) Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn and DCInterNet Senior Assistant Manager Ms Liu Dan. Joining via Microsoft Teams were Dean of Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FICT) Prof Ts Dr Liew Soung Yue and Dean of Faculty of Science Assoc Prof Dr Lim Tuck Meng.

Prof Dato’ Ewe said, “This memorandum of understanding and student exchange agreement are the result of our cooperation over the past few years. It is also a new starting point for our future development. We will take this opportunity to further strengthen our cooperation. We will continue to work together to learn from each other and share resources to provide students with a richer and more comprehensive educational experience. At the same time, we will also jointly explore new academic fields and promote the development of research to better serve society and promote relations between Malaysia and China.”

Mr Fu said, “The memorandum of understanding and agreement signed today marks a historic milestone and takes the relationship between our two universities to an unprecedented level. This important moment paves the way for extensive discussions on future developments, promoting exchanges and cooperation between the two universities. We hope to explore new areas and enable new areas of collaboration that will not only benefit our academic community but also contribute to the advancement of knowledge. I sincerely hope that our bond will continue to deepen and consolidate through fruitful cooperation in the coming years.”

Following the signing ceremony, a comprehensive discussion, covering key areas of collaboration, took place. Topics of discussion included student and teacher exchange, particularly in Southeast Asian tropical studies, as well as, scholar exchange and short-term visits. The conversation extended to cooperation between the Faculty of Science and Information Technology, emphasising joint research initiatives in environmental sustainability, renewable energy, and new energy sources.
