In conjunction with Malaysia Day, the Centre for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Kampar Campus organised the Malaysia Day Quiz Competition and Malaysia Day Instagram Reel Competition on 20 September 2023 at UTAR Learning Complex I (Block B). The Malaysia Day competitions aimed to promote unity and patriotism among the UTAR community as well as allow them to showcase their skills, ideas, and talents.

CFS (Kampar Campus) Director Ts Tan Lee Siew was delighted to witness the display of creativity and passion by UTAR students. She said, “UTAR students are highly sought after by many industries in different countries. It is because of our diversity of languages and dialects; and high adaptability in embracing differences, which could be easily noticed in our unity and diversity. This is the mindset we should continue to practise. It not only allows us to mingle with friends from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, but also allows higher flexibility in different industrial environments. Let us work hard together and make Malaysia a prosperous and peaceful country.”

In his remarks, Organising Chairperson Mr Sree Amertharaj Ratnam said “Malaysia Day is a fitting time to ignite patriotism, loyalty, pride, and appreciation for our country, especially for the younger generations. Through patriotism, it unites us under one nation. Besides the prizes, I believe the students will gain new knowledge, acquire new skills such as video shooting and video editing; and also make new friends throughout the competitions.”

The quiz competition challenged the students to 30 questions with the topics centred around Malaysian history, geography, culture, and even present-day events. The students were required to complete the quiz via a live Quizizz session. It received more than 30 participations from UTAR students.

Every student was allowed nearly a minute to answer each question. During the quiz-answering session, suspense, solemnity, and enthusiasm spiralled interchangeably around the air. Some students picked their answers in a matter of seconds, while some took their time to ensure thorough judgment. Perhaps the vibrantly quirky atmosphere was also coupled with the witty and insightful remarks by the Organising Chairperson-cum-facilitator Mr Sree Amertharaj, the quiz session was positively developed into a fun and colourful one.

The quiz competition reached its climax when the top five quizzers were announced. The quietness may have remained, but the students’ eager demeanours were conspicuous.

Malaysia Day Instagram Reel Competition

Themed ‘Malaysia, My Pride’, the Malaysia Day Instagram Reel Competition required the students to visualise their love and connection towards our country via short videos, with a 30 to 45-second-long playback time. The videos were submitted to the organising committee before the deadline, 8 September 2023.

The videos were analysed and shortlisted by the judges, CFS (Kampar Campus) academic Ms Hoh Ming Chee and Faculty of Arts and Social Science (FAS) academic Puan Norlis binti Ismail, and Faculty of Creative Industries academics Puan Suhaila binti Ahmad Zaki and Encik Abdul Malik bin Ahmad.

Although only five entries were selected as winners, all the participants displayed immense love for our country with their close connection to the various aspects of Malaysia such as historical events, locations, cuisine, culture, and even the unique nexus between different ethnicities. The video presentation session was filled with creativity and passion, accompanying the pool of contents were classics such as “Tanggal 31 Ogos” and “Jalur Gemilang”.
