On 26 September 2023, UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat was invited to grace the inauguration ceremony of the UTAR sub-centre, Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies in Nishan, Qufu, located in the Shandong Province of China.

The event took place in conjunction with the Nishan World Forum on the Culture of Confucian Entrepreneurs which drew the participation of experts and scholars from around the globe. At the event, Prof Dato’ Ewe was extended a special invitation to the stage, where he, alongside Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies Party Secretary, Deputy Director and the Confucius Foundation of China Vice President and Secretary-General, Ms Guo Chengyan, jointly unveiled the commemorative plaque for the UTAR sub-centre.

This sub-centre is the fourth establishment of the Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies located overseas. The previous three sub-centres were established at Durban University of Technology in South Africa, the University of Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Krirk University in Thailand.

The foundation of this collaboration between UTAR and the Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies was laid on 19 May 2023 when Prof Dato’ Ewe signed an agreement on behalf of UTAR. The agreement formalised the establishment of a sub-centre at UTAR with a primary focus on Confucianism research. In addition to research activities, the sub-centre will also be responsible for organising academic and cultural exchange programmes related to cultural transmission, Chinese studies, Chinese teaching and research, and the comparative study of Chinese and Western philosophy, among other related pursuits.
