The Centre
for Foundation Studies (CFS) of Sungai Long Campus organized the
“Mathematics & Science Fair 2023” on 13 September 2023 at level 1 concourse
area of UTAR KB Block. The fair aimed to instil interest in Mathematics,
Science and IT among the students.
A total of
five booths was set up during the fair. It included the Biology booth,
Mathematics booth, Physics booth, Chemistry booth as well as the Green booth
that tested the participants’ eco-knowledge through an engaging quiz
session. Through the quiz, the participants were able to learn in a fun and
practical way to lead a greener life.
On top of
that, three competitions were also held on that day which included the
Science Genius Challenge, Mathematics for Fun 5.0, and IT Competition and
Workshop: Create a game in Phyton using ChatGPT.
According to
the Organising Chairperson Mr Foo Heng Yen, the activities at the fair were
catered to improve students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Lee Xi Jun said, “The fair was a very good place to learn a lot of useful
information. Some of the games involved critical thinking, hence it was
really useful.”

Ms Melissa Stefanie Netto expressed her gratitude to the committee members,
lecturers, student helpers, and colleagues for bringing the event to life.
She also encouraged students to take this opportunity to immerse themselves
in Science and explore it. She ended her speech by congratulating the
winners of the competitions.

Ensuing was
the prize-giving ceremony for the three competitions. The first runner-up
winner of Mathematics for Fun 5.0 was Foundation in Science student Chong
Chun Wei while the Champion was Mechanical Engineering student Chong Yoong
Kiat.

The first runner-up winner of the “IT Competition and Workshop: Create a
game in Phyton using ChatGPT” was Foundation in Science student Liang Jing
Hoe while the Champion was Foundation in Science student Lee Zi Yi.
