MoU signing between UTAR and USTB

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between UTAR and the University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB) was held on 17 October 2023 at Sungai Long Campus. The MoU aimed to foster international collaborative research projects, initiate joint talent training programmes, facilitate student mobility opportunities and more.

The representatives from USTB were its President Prof Dr Yang Renshu, Director of International Student Center Assoc Prof Dr Zhao Baoyong, Director of Academic Affairs Prof Dr Luo Xiong, Dean of the School of Metallurgical and Ecological Engineering Prof Dr Zhang Jianliang, Director Office of the Alumni Association Assoc Prof He Jin and International Student Center Shen Zhipeng.

The representatives from UTAR were UTAR President Ir Prof Dato’ Dr Ewe Hong Tat, Dean of Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) Assoc Prof Ts Dr Yap Wun She, Head of Centre for Curriculum Development and Innovation Dr Ngeow Yeok Meng, Director of Division of Community and International Networking (DCInterNet) Assoc Prof Dr Lai Soon Onn and Director of Institute of Postgraduate Studies, Research Assoc Prof Dr Yong Thian Khok and Head of Department of Mechanical and Material Engineering Assoc Prof Ts Dr Yeo Wei Hong. Joining via video conferencing from UTAR Kampar Campus were Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT) Ir Prof Dr Ng Choon Aun and Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) Deputy Dean for Student Development and Industrial Training Dr Kuah Yoke Chin.

Director of Eastern Steel Sdn Bhd and Chief Operating Officer Tee Choon Hock, and TSLAW Group Assistant to Executive Chairman Janice Liu joined the ceremony as well.

Prof Dato’ Ewe delivering his speech

Prof Dato’ Ewe said, “The signing of this memorandum of understanding not only represents the connection between the two universities, but it also symbolises our shared vision, which is to collaborate in nurturing global future leaders and addressing global challenges together. I believe that through international cooperation, we can promote the exchange of science and culture, and foster peace and prosperity. Through this memorandum of understanding ceremony, I hope that both universities will collaborate in various aspects, including research projects, faculty and staff exchanges, student exchange programmes, seminars, workshops, and more in the future.”

Prof Yang congratulated UTAR for teaching students to adapt to future challenges, paying equal attention to research and academics, cultivating outstanding students, and achieving outstanding results in the past 20 years. He said, “Currently, all our majors are recruiting international students. In recent years, the school has put forward an international school philosophy in cultivating teachers and students, encouraging students to study abroad and guiding foreign students to study in China. We also hope that our teachers can go abroad for academic exchanges. The MoU we signed today will also be an opportunity for UTAR students to study our distinctive academic majors at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, and our students to study abroad at UTAR.”

Other topics of discussion included student exchange programmes, study tours, research collaboration, joint training for students, thesis guidance and more.
