A group of 32 undergraduate students from UTAR Kampar Campus, two foundation students from Sungai Long Campus, and three members of the Great Eastern Agency (I-Gen XYZ) from Ipoh embarked on an insightful field trip to Menara Great Eastern, situated on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur on 20 September 2023 along with the accompaniment of four lecturers, namely Dr Kuah Yoke Chin, Dr Dinesh Kumar Saundra Rajan, Chong Tun Pin and Chia Mei Si from the Faculty of Business and Finance.

The primary objective of the field trip was to acquaint the students with real-world practices in the insurance industry, while shedding light on the diverse job scopes and career pathways available within the insurance industry.

During the visit, the undergraduate students and faculty members had the privilege of engaging with Head of Agency Recruitment and Productivity Mr Scott Wong Charng Yeon, Human Resources Business Partner at Great Eastern Life Mr Steve Lau and Group Manager of I-GenXYZ Financial Group Mr Ng Kwan Yew, who are currently serving at Great Eastern. They introduced their departments and their roles at Great Eastern as well as their invaluable insights and experiences in the domains of recruitment and the insurance industry.

While exploring Menara Great Eastern, the undergraduate students and faculty members were enlightened about the customer service and agency service central, which have been seamlessly integrated with digitalisation and contactless approaches to enhance overall productivity. Additionally, Mr Wong also discussed the percentage of uninsured individuals in Malaysia, highlighting that the top three in-demand insurance products are medical and health insurance, life insurance, and personal accident insurance.

In this opportune setting, Mr Wong extended an invitation to the students to consider joining the Great Eastern through the management associate programme, a 24-month training programme and internship programmes.

Meanwhile, Mr Ng provided detailed information regarding these programmes, including their requirements and associated benefits, and emphasised the opportunities for personal and professional growth.

In conclusion, the field trip was a valuable experience for the students, affording them the opportunity to interact with industry practitioners and gain deeper insights into the insurance sector’s operation and its potential career. The students and faculty members also appreciated the warm welcome and generous hospitality extended by the Great Eastern.
