Field trip to Ipoh Industrial Court

A group of five Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) students, namely Rishalini Karunagaran, Vinosha Magesvaran, Yap Kai Lean, Pavithrarethi Dorairaj and Srri Sudar Nallakumar from the Faculty of Business and Finance (FBF) of UTAR visited Industrial Court, Ipoh on 18 September 2023.

The students were accompanied by three lecturers, namely Dr Ramesh Kumar Moona Haji Mohamed, Dr S. Charles Ramendran and Dr Siti Fazilah binti Abdul Shukor from FBF. The trip aimed to shed light on the proceedings of the Industrial Court.

Guided by the Registrar of the Ipoh Industrial Court Mr Abdul Ghafar Abdul Rahman, the students were briefed about the case which was heard live.

Dr Ramesh explained, “During the visit, the students were given the opportunity to jot down some notes and ask some questions related to the Industrial Court. The question and answer session between Mr Ghafar and UTAR took about 30 minutes. The students learned various insights about the Industrial Court and were excited to watch the hearing of the case. The environment was so lively that they learned the practicalities of the court proceedings. The case was about a claimant who was dismissed from a company after conducting a due inquiry. The claimant believed that the whole domestic inquiry was done in mala fide, therefore he requested the industrial court to look into the natural justice applied in the domestic inquiry.”

Dr Charles added that the industrial court visitation has given a legal framework for the students on understanding the best practices in the industrial relations.

The field trip ended successfully at about 4.35 p.m. The students were all happy to be able to gain something practical from the field trip.
