The Centre for Foundation Studies of Kampar Campus (CFS-KPR) organised a talk titled “Outcome-Based Education 2023” on 23 August 2023 at EDK5, UTAR Kampar Campus. The talk was delivered by CFS academic Mr Remie Lee Ren-Yi and moderated by CFS academic Ms Bhargkavi Pari.
The talk aimed to introduce Outcome-Based Education (OBE), an approach that focuses on the attainment of intended learning outcomes, where students develop behaviours that are authentic to their discipline and are assessed holistically within the context of their learning.
Lee started the talk by enlightening the audience on the importance of OBE. He said, “OBE approach caters to measurable Course Outcomes (COs) and Programme Outcomes (POs) by providing learning activities that help students attain these outcomes and assessing the extent to which students achieve them using explicit assessment criteria as performance indicators.”
He added, “Since OBE shifts the focus from teacher-centred learning to student-oriented learning, it has been proven to be more effective in encouraging students’ interest and enhancing the learning experience. Besides, OBE is also a requirement of certain professional bodies such as the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), Professional Programmes, and the Malaysia Education Blueprint (2015-2025) Higher Education.”
Before ending his talk, Lee proceeded to illustrate UTAR’s OBE processes and framework, and explained the Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs), Programme Outcomes (PO), and Course Outcomes (CO), and how these elements fit within UTAR’s Six Educational Pillars and the Eight Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF) Levels of Descriptors (LODs).
The talk ended with an insightful Q&A session.
