UTAR students and staff
Twenty-one eager students from UTAR embarked on an eye-opening visit to the
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Headquarters on 7 September
2023. Accompanied by their esteemed mentors, Dr Ngeow Yeok Meng, Dr D.
Charanjit Kaur, and Mrs Patricia Liang Chooi Ling, this educational
excursion proved to be a remarkable experience for all involved.
Upon reaching the imposing MACC Headquarters, the students embarked on an
immersive tour that would change their perspectives forever. Their first
stop was the Studio, home to MACC Radio Channel, where they delved into the
inner workings of a round-the-clock broadcasting hub. Here, they discovered
the secrets behind hosting special guests and churning out captivating radio
content.

What truly made this visit unforgettable, however, was the warm welcome and
enlightening interactions with the seasoned MACC officers. These
professionals posed thought-provoking questions that stimulated the
students’ minds. During these engaging discussions, the officers shared
their profound insights into MACC’s four main jurisdictions: corruption
prevention, investigation, and the pivotal Anti-Corruption Act of 2009.
A highlight of the visit was Tuan Firdaus’s captivating tour, where he
unveiled the Cam Parade Room and the Video Interviewing Room (VIR). The
innovative use of CCTV and one-way mirrors to ensure transparency in the
performance of officers’ duties left a lasting impression on the students.
Tuan Kumaran, another MACC authority, presented compelling cases that
illustrated the Malaysian government’s unwavering commitment to addressing
issues and proactively preventing corruption through education.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the visit was the exploration of the
Polygraph, a tool that helps in detecting deception during investigations.
The students were given a firsthand glimpse into the delicate and
professional treatment of individuals under arrest (OKT), highlighting
MACC’s dedication to upholding the highest standards of ethics.

In addition to these eye-opening experiences, the UTAR delegation had the
opportunity to explore various MACC facilities and recreational amenities.
Kospera,
a cooperative store, offered a delightful array of food, soft drinks, and
essential items. A fully equipped gym provided a glimpse into the physical
fitness regimen of MACC officers, while a well-stocked library offered a
treasure trove of knowledge on law, psychology, sociology, modern
investigative methods, and local and foreign publications.
Before embarking on their trip, the students took the initiative to organise
three movie screenings: “Official Secrets,” “We Steal Secrets,” and
“Integrity.” These screenings were conducted in compliance with licensing
regulations and online rental.

In summary, the UTAR students’ visit to the MACC Headquarters was an
enlightening journey into the heart of anti-corruption efforts in Malaysia.
It was a day of discovery, inspiration, and a renewed commitment to ethical
governance and accountability. This experience will undoubtedly leave a
lasting impact on these young minds, shaping the future of Malaysia in the
fight against corruption.
